Family Focused
Special Education Advocates is a family organization. Founders Amy and Derek are Educational Diagnosticians with decades of experience working in education. They utilize a deep understanding of the system to ensure that your core questions and concerns are understood. Unfortunately, sometimes school staff discount parent participation. But, as the parent, you understand your child's needs better than anyone. We will work with you to prepare for Individual Education Plan meetings and communicate your concerns directly. Know all of your rights, including the fact that you are one of only two consensus members in the IEP meeting and that you do not have to agree. Online IEP advocacy is available everywhere. Current rates are 50 for a half hour phone consultation, 100 an hour for video calls to prepare for meetings, and 100 an hour for IEP meeting participation. There is no charge to review annual and FIE reports prior to the video call.
We are not lawyers and simply offer our honest assessment of your situation and represent your core concerns in IEP meetings. The goal is to replace our advocacy with an advocate at the school. The quality of relationship between the student, their case manager, and the parents largely determines whether or not educational needs are met. The best advocate for your child is a case manager that is empowered by their administrator to communicate with you and the rest of the school and get everyone on the same page. It is preferable to build a relationship with district staff, as lawyers are expensive. And, it is often possible to push for a more effective relationship with the school. However, if it comes to that and your hire a lawyer, we may assist but do not take on mediation and due process alone.

Diffuse your stress
We started this organization because so many parents expressed the need for advocacy. Amy and Derek are here to get to know your situation and provide solutions that work for you. Nobody likes a know-it-all and if you need an advocate you probably feel stonewalled by the system. This video link provides details about how to access special education related law. The information may be useful, or may be overwhelming. But, we will simply listen to you and guide you about how to proceed.
What we do
We advocate for special education students of every grade level, from Pre-K through 12.
Network
We are informed by a diverse cohort of educational professionals. As Educational Diagnosticians, we facilitate IEP meetings, conduct assessments and include everyone involved in meeting students' educational needs.
